Inside the Data

The LTC Data Cooperative brings together a growing network of skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities contributing longitudinal Electronic Health Record (EHR) data dating back to 2019. On this page, explore our geographic reach, facility and resident characteristics, and key clinical data elements.

For a detailed profile of the skilled nursing facility data, see Characteristics of the Long-Term Care Data Cooperative: A New Resource for Research on Outcomes in Long-Term Care (Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, February 2026).

Important Considerations for Working with EHR Data
  • EHR data are real-world data. Data reflect clinical documentation practices and may vary in completeness and coding consistency across facilities. Researchers should expect to conduct internal validation and assess data variation within their approved study.
  • Key EHR data elements. These data uniquely capture clinical information, including vital signs, labs, immunization and medication administration records, height and weight, and medical orders, not found in other data sources.
  • Data elements and time periods vary by facility. EHR data are available for most contributing facilities beginning in 2019, though coverage varies — some facilities have data extending further back, and others are represented for only a subset of these years. Each published dataset reflects an approximate 3-to-4-month lag from the data collection period.
